Low Stress Tips On Going Green

green_tree_frogIt’s not easy being green, but don’t make it harder on yourself than you have to

We all have to do what we can to help heal the damage our species has inflicted on this planet.  This is our challenge; a quest of mythic proportions.  However, knocking yourself out in your quest to go completely green will not help you, your family or the planet in the long run.  There are some low stress things you can do in order to be more environmentally responsible.

 Buy Less Stuff

Stuff is great, but only so much of it.  That head of lettuce might be a bargain, but it doesn’t make sense buying a wheelbarrow full of lettuce if you live by yourself.  That’s not smart shopping — that’s waste, pure and simple.  Now, admittedly, that’s example was a bit of an exaggeration, but if you stop to think about what you buy verses what you need, then you might find other wheelbarrow full of lettuce in your life.  If you don’t follow any other low stress way to go green, follow this one.

Vacation At Home

Quite often, after you come from a vacation, you need another vacation to recover from the vacation you just had.  Due to the cost of airline tickets and fuel, canceling your vacation might not be an option.  My Mom just had to cancel plans to visit my brother and his family in British Columbia because of a major lack of money.  However, she is more relaxed in that she knows she doesn’t have to fight the airport crowds and that she has lessened her carbon impact somewhat.  Remember, CO2 is also produced by cars as well as airplanes.

And what is the point of a vacation, anyway?  It’s to relax.  You can find many ways to do that in your home, yard, local park or home town activities.  Check out your local newspaper to see just how much stuff is going on near you.  You spend a phenomenal amount of money on the rent or mortgage payments — you might as well enjoy your home as much as possible.

Eat Less Beef

Calm down, I’m not telling you to become a vegetarian, just eat beef less often.  It takes acres of farmland to produce the feed for a cow and an incredible amount of water.  There is a lot of evidence to support that incredibly large fed lots are one of the most damaging things we humans do to the environment.  But they wouldn’t be there is we weren’t demanding the beef.  Less demand for beef — less feed lots — less need to use farmland to feed cows.

Hope this helps.
