I like having time to spend on my hobbies and on things I generally enjoy doing. I can’t really think of anyone who doesn’t. It seems like the basic tasks of life try to get in the way daily, though.
I’ve had to think through how I handle even basic tasks, especially since I work from home. I’ve had to decide whether it’s worth breaking in the middle of my work day to start a load of laundry. If I get it done during the day, after all, I’ll have more time for fun in the evening. But, at the same time, I lose time that could be spent earning money.
The only solution I’ve come up with is absolutely minimizing the time it takes to clean up, and, surprise, that means that I can’t let tasks build up to the point where they’ll take longer to do.
In college, I was the kid who let dishes pile up in the sink until there was no more clean dishes, and since my grandmother had gifted me with a full set, it could take a while. Doing the dishes was a commitment — I had to devote an hour or two to get it done.
But now, a dish gets used, and then it gets dealt with immediately. The time commitment is negligible. The same principle holds true for everything. You know that cousin that stresses you out, every time you call her, because she pours out her whole life story and keeps you on the phone for hours? Yeah, I don’t do that anymore, either. An email or short phone chat once a week means that we’re always caught up.
This is how stress goes away. You don’t have to get organized. You don’t have to make your life perfect. You just need to get the basics done and move on.
