There are so many options for dealing with stress in our lives, and they can be very helpful. But it might improve basic qualities of life to prevent some of that stress in the first place. It’s impossible to entirely eliminate it, and tricks that work for some people may not work for you: each of us has our own stress-inducers and our own ways of relaxing. But trying one or more of these tips may give you an extra tool that you didn’t have before.
- Plan relaxation time into your schedule. If you have a regular opportunity to do something that de-stresses you, you can prevent tensions from building up. And if it’s on your schedule, you can avoid losing that bit of time to a meeting or an errand.
- Back off from your stress-inducers. If your biggest stress is a certain individual at work, try to put a little space between you. Consider only opening their emails once a day, or other ways of limiting your interaction. The same can go for people in your private life. It is difficult to eliminate a person from your life, but you can limit their chances to stress you out.
- Set your own goals and rewards. Plenty of other people get opportunities to set goals for you, from your boss to your family, and there’s rarely a special reward for meeting them. But if you can provide your own incentive — even simple ones like a run to a favorite coffee shop — you can turn a stressing situation into a positive experience.
