There are a few milestones in life that you want to be absolutely perfect. Maybe you’re planning for a wedding or the arrival of a new baby. There are plenty of smaller ‘big days’ that can cause stress too — getting together with family or planning an event at work.
My cousin had one of those big events last week: she gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl. The whole family made sure that the baby would have everything she needed… my cousin even told me that the baby was better dressed than she was.
I was amazed to see, though, that no one got anything for the mama-to-be. The closest were some offers of babysitting down the line and a few meals pre-made and shoved in the freezer.
That was the only clue I needed to pick out my present for her. I got her a massage — something just for her and a chance for her to relax. She said she needed it, too. The massage gave her a chance to sort out some of the reasons she was stressed, like the fact that this was the longest she’d ever spent away from work and she was missing it.
Sometimes, a little stress can get lost in a whole lot of excitement. I think a lot of us don’t want to take a chance at seeming unhappy during what is supposed to be a great experience. But taking even a little bit of time for ourselves shouldn’t be seen negatively. Instead, it should be a necessity, so that we can focus on building good memories.
