Natural Tranquilizers

I need whatever this pup is onI’ve had a bad weekend.  In the same weekend, I was dropped from Medicaid (meaning I have no health insurance now); I was summoned for jury duty; and a five year old boy tried to steal my dog twice.  My dog is fine — my nerves are not.  Hopefully, years later, I will see a lot of humor in this situation, but for right now I ain’t laughing.  I shook so badly after catching the boy trying to walk off with my dog that I had to take Nyquil.  I don’t recommend a Nyquil as a tranquilizer — it put me into a stupor for two days…I think…maybe it was only a day…

Anyway, here are a couple of natural tranquilizers I did in order to keep me from wringing that boy’s neck.  I was too shaky to make herbal tea or go anywhere near hot water, otherwise I’d add taking a hot bath and drinking chamomile tea to the list.  Hope these suggestions help.

Count Backwards From 100

If you can remember to count backwards, great. This natural tranquilizer is a great way to try and defuse your temper.  However, if you’re too upset, just count forewords as far as you need to.  The counting seems to help put your mental focus on the counting rather than on the person you want to give a good slap to.

You can’t slap the other person unless you can claim self-defense, even if the person really deserves it (such as my pint-sized dognapper).  Seriously — you can be charged with assault and arrested.  Just count and try to get perspective and don’t worry about what you look like when you are counting.

Make A List

Numbers hurt my head, so counting is not my initial response to frayed nerves.  As a kid, I would write out lists of things, no matter how badly I was holding the pen. I’d make a list of model horses I had (and I named them all), of all the books I had or how many ABBA song titles I could remember (this was years before I discovered Peter Gabriel).  If I didn’t have a pen, I’d try to do it in my head.  I think this was an instinctive attempt to meditate, by changing the focus of my thoughts so that I could calm down.

Play Computer Solitaire

If playing solitaire with an actual deck of cards works for you, go for it!  Solitaire is a highly underestimated as a natural tranquilizer.  Since my body tends to shake badly when my nerves are shot, I prefer the computer version.  And the neat part is that computer solitaire often comes free with the computer platform.

Get Locks For Your Fences And Doors

Okay, technically, this isn’t an entirely NATURAL solution, but it sure has a quick tranquilizing effect on me.

Hope this helps.

I try to stay away from medication as much as possible. Especially sleeping pills. I don’t like the idea of not being in control of my body.

Good point. You do loose control of your body with medications, even just Nyquil. For example, you might suddenly empty your bowels without any bodily warning.
