Picking a College Major

Making a decision is tough

Making a decision is tough

Everyone has the right to a university degree in America, even if it’s in Hamburger Technology.” — Clive James

One of the most stressful times of my life was having to declare a major before applying to Millersville University. I already had a Liberal Arts degree, but that doesn’t really count, apparently, because I only needed two years in community college to get it. I had hoped that at the end of the two years (not to mention the previous twelve in regular school) that I would figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. Didn’t work.

So, I chickened out of making any decision and let my Mom pick my college major. Big mistake. If you remember nothing else from this article, remember this — don’t let your relatives pick your college major.

You’re Not Crazy

If you can’t make up your mind what subject you want to major in, you’re not alone. Getting a college degree is a bit like marriage. You’re questioning yourself all of the time. You worry that you are taking the wrong major for you. You wonder if this will somehow scar you for the rest of your life. But yet you’ve invested so much time and money that you can’t afford to switch majors.

Relax.

The worst that can happen to you is that you find out after graduation that you took the wrong major. But having ANY college degree looks better than having none at all. And if you managed to get a great grade point average, too, then that also looks good to prospective employers.

There’s Always Time To Change Your Mind

Mom decided I was to be an English major. I threw myself into it and graduated with honors. When I graduated, I was surprised to learn that all I was qualified to do with my English major was speak English. However, you learn to make the best with what you have when you absolutely have to. My current job (as web content freelance writer) didn’t even exist when I graduated in 1991. Now, I can actually use all the stuff I’ve forgotten in college.

The point is, you always have time to change your mind with your life span. Colleges and careers aren’t going anywhere, so you can take your time getting to them once you realize what your passion is. Turns out, my passion is writing, so maybe I took the right major after all.

I’m glad I chose my major on own :) . I know it puts the whole responsibility on you if you fail, but how can you fail when you study what you really love.
